The Secret to Finding Your Purpose (Hint: It’s Not What You Think)
How many times have you been asked, “What’s your purpose?” or “What’s your why?” Do you freeze like a deer in headlights and then spiral into an existential crisis? Same, my friend. For the longest time, my go-to answer was “my son.” While my son is a massive part of my life, I realized he isn’t my entire purpose—he’s part of the puzzle, not the whole picture.
My Purpose Statement
Let me share mine as an example:
“I inspire and guide others by helping them set achievable goals, using my empathy, coaching skills, and resilience, and guided by authenticity, growth, and compassion. My ultimate goal is to help people live happier and more fulfilling lives.”
This purpose statement isn’t set in stone—it’s more like a living, breathing document of who I am and what I want to do. Just like companies update their vision and mission every few years, you can tweak yours as you grow.
Where My Son Fits In
You might wonder, “But wait, isn’t your family part of your purpose?” Absolutely! My purpose fuels my ability to show up as the best version of myself for my son and family.
Here’s a proud mom moment: The other day, my son was eating breakfast, glanced at my book on the counter, and said, “Holy cow, Mom! I can tell people my mom is a published author!” Cue the happy tears. It reminded me that when I live my purpose, I set an example for him. He’s watching, learning, and absorbing it all.
Living Your Purpose Daily
When you’re clear on your purpose, decision-making becomes a lot easier. I keep my purpose statement visible, and whenever I get invited to an event or asked to take on something new, I ask myself:
Does this align with my values?
Does it help me grow?
Does it feel authentic?
If the answer is no to any of those questions, I politely decline or ask more questions for clarification. Living with purpose isn’t just about big moments; it’s about showing up for yourself every single day.
Creating Your Purpose Statement
Ready to craft your own “Why” or “Mission” statement? It’s all about blending three key ingredients:
1. Values
These are your non-negotiables—the principles that guide your life. Choose at least three core values.
Examples: Resilience, authenticity, compassion
2. Passion
What lights you up? What brings you joy every day? What’s something you could do endlessly without feeling drained?
Examples: Helping others, creating, teaching
3. Strengths
What are you really good at? These are the unique skills or traits that set you apart.
Examples: Problem-solving, empathy, leadership
Pro Tip: Keep It Simple and Real
Don’t overthink it. Your purpose statement doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to resonate with you. Write it down, revisit it often, and let it evolve as you grow.
Takeaways
Your purpose isn’t static—it’s a reflection of where you are in life right now.
Living your purpose sets the tone for how you show up for yourself and those around you.
Crafting a purpose statement starts with understanding your values, passions, and strengths.
