Adventures in Parenting: The Chaos, the Laughs, and the Mysterious Disappearances of Left Socks

Let’s address the elephant in the room—or should I say, the missing left sock? 🧦 Seriously, can someone tell me where it goes? I thought I had a genius idea this year: stamp Aiden’s (my 11-year-old) name on all his socks. Two weeks into middle school, and we’ve already had a sock casualty. Where do they disappear to? Is there a parallel universe filled with lost left socks? Do they consciously uncouple from their right-sided partners? If anyone figures it out, let me know. We miss that sock! 😆

Late-Night Brain: The Real MVP

Speaking of mysteries, why does my brain think 11 p.m. is the perfect time to **review my entire life**? Every night, just as I’m about to fall asleep, my mind goes down a rabbit hole. How did I get here? I’m an Army veteran who finally "came out" after 18 years of handling anxiety, PTSD, and MST alone (pro tip: not recommended). Fun times, right? I’ve also been sober for over a year now. 🎉

In between all that, I became a wife in 2012, a mom in 2013 (Aiden was at the wedding, because why not multitask?). I quit jobs, switched degrees, survived COVID, became a life coach, lost weight, annoyed everyone with my newfound awesomeness, realized I wasn't all that, and went to therapy (FYI: it works). Then I broke my foot trying to be the "fun mom," gained the majority of the weight back, and started meditating. Did I mention I’m still married and trying to be a glamorous wife too? Are you exhausted yet? Same. 😅

How I Attempt to "Do It All”

There’s no magic wand. My life is an adventure, and the key to survival? Organization and finding humor in the chaos. So, let me share a few things that keep me (somewhat) sane while yelling at Aiden for the millionth time to shower, get dressed, and actually put on shoes! 👟 Where’s the Staples “Easy Button” when you need it?

1. Make Your Bed

This might sound basic, but making your bed can give you a tiny burst of accomplishment. I didn’t do this growing up (just ask my parents about my room). But during the pandemic, I started, and it’s been a game-changer. Starting the day with this one small win sets the tone for the rest of your day. 🛏️

Meditate, Pray, or Practice Gratitude

Every morning, I dedicate about 20 minutes to meditating, praying, and practicing gratitude. And no, you can’t reach for your phone or turn on the news before this! 📵 It’s the perfect way to center myself before diving into the day’s chaos. And afterward, I reward myself with a good ol’ crime show (balance, people!).

Colorful plate filled with fresh vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains for a balanced meal.

Eat a Hearty Breakfast

I’m always nagging Aiden (and my husband) to eat breakfast. My husband used to survive on two slices of bacon—he’s since upgraded to adding cereal. 🥣 Studies show a healthy breakfast improves mood, stress management, and brain function. So, fuel up and grab that cup of coffee (aka my morning survival juice). ☕️

Exercise (Ugh, I Know)

It’s the part of my routine I dread the most but need the most. Whether it’s a 30-minute walk or something more intense, exercise is my not-so-secret weapon for staying sane. It’s not my favorite, but the benefits? Totally worth it. 💪

So, that’s a glimpse into my wonderfully chaotic life. How do I manage it all? I don’t always, and that’s okay! It’s about finding balance, laughing at the ridiculousness of it all, and embracing the quirks along the way. Life is one big adventure, and I’m just rolling with it. 🌪️💫
