Mindfulness for Beginners: How I Found Peace in Chaos

Back in the day, anything related to yoga, mindfulness, or meditation seemed way too “out there” for me. The idea of sitting in silence with my thoughts? Nope, HARD PASS! But here’s the thing—mindfulness doesn’t have to be this grand, mystical practice. In fact, you might already be practicing mindfulness without even knowing it.

What Is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the simple practice of paying full attention to the present moment, without judgment. It’s about being aware of your thoughts, emotions, and surroundings, and accepting them as they are—no need to change or control them. When you focus on the here and now, mindfulness can help reduce stress, improve mental clarity, and bring a sense of calm and well-being. Instead of getting lost in worries about the past or future, mindfulness encourages you to observe your experiences with curiosity and openness.

Children Are Naturally Mindful
It’s no surprise to me that kids are naturally good at mindfulness. They don’t carry all the stressors that adults do, and they’re naturally curious. Aiden, my son, is a perfect example. He’ll sit in thought for a while, then look me straight in the eye and tell me exactly what he’s been thinking, what he plans to do about it, and how he’s going to go about it. And if he needs help, he’ll ask. No judgment, just pure focus on the moment.

Starting Your Own Mindfulness Practice
Here’s the key: Start small, without judgment. Begin with just five minutes of silence—no phone, no kids, no interruptions. Light a candle or some incense if that helps create a calming atmosphere. And before you say you don’t have time, consider how long you spend scrolling through social media in the bathroom. You can make time for this. 😉

Mindfulness in Action—Even at the Olympics
As I was watching the 2024 Paris Olympics a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that every single athlete practices mindfulness before they compete. You can see gymnasts visualizing their routines in their heads on the sidelines, mentally preparing for each move. Even Snoop Dogg probably practices mindfulness in his own way. 😄

Why Mindfulness Helps:

  • Stress Reduction: Mindfulness helps you manage stress by staying present, so you’re not overwhelmed by future worries or past regrets. And believe me, I’m an Olympic Gold medalist in creating imaginary future disasters that never actually happen.

  • Improved Focus: Practices like meditation help sharpen your ability to concentrate on goals and tasks, leading to better performance. Think of it as mental training for everything you do.

  • Emotional Regulation: Mindfulness teaches you to respond to challenges calmly and thoughtfully, instead of reacting impulsively. I used to be so reactive that I felt like I was walking on eggshells around myself—talk about being a ticking time bomb. But mindfulness helped me defuse that.

  • Creativity and Problem-Solving: When you quiet your mind, you create space for creative thinking and innovative problem-solving. This is crucial for success, no matter what field you’re in.

Give It a Try
So, just try it. You’ll thank me later. Remember, mindfulness is a "practice"—you won’t get better by doing it once and calling it a failure. You have to keep at it, every single day.
